President’s Message – September 2021

Dear Friends and Members,

We were so happy to see those of you who attended our Social Hours in Syracuse, Albany, and Utica. All three Happy Hours were very well attended, and everyone was happy to see each other and socialize again. While we have many upcoming events this fall, our next big get-together will be our Annual Meeting and Dinner on December 9, 2021, at the Craftsman Wood Grille & Tap House in Fayetteville. We are hoping to see many of you there, especially since we were unable to have an Annual Dinner last year.

Between now and December, we will be presenting a wide variety of CLEs.

We are fortunate to have our own Judge Grant C. Jaquith, Professor Elizabeth G. Kubala (Syracuse University Law School), and Mara D. Afzali (Bond, Schoeneck & King, PLLC) presenting a CLE on Representing Veteran Clients in the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims on September 17, 2021.

Michael Sciotti will be presenting a CLE on Trying a Prisoner Case, on October 15, 2021 in Albany and October 22, 2021 in Syracuse.

Michael Langan will be presenting a CLE on Motions to Dismiss Under Federal Rule 12 on October 19, 2021.

Judge Wendy A. Kinsella will be presenting a CLE on the Basics of Bankruptcy Practice on October 20, 2021.

We are also planning additional CLEs on the following topics: 1) New York’s legalization of marijuana and important considerations concerning potentially conflicting federal laws, 2) assessing conflicts of interest when taking on new clients, and when and how to terminate a client relationship (ethics credits will be offered); 3) an Albany Law School panel discussion on diversity in the profession (diversity credit will be offered); and 4) veterans’ rights.

On September 24, 2021, the annual Supreme Court update “The United States Supreme Court: the 2021-2022 Term,” will be held at the Syracuse University College of Law. The keynote speaker opening this year’s program will be Supreme Court Correspondent David G. Savage of the Los Angeles Time, who will speak on “The Supreme Court Turning Right Again.” Following the CLE, we will have a reception for new attorneys and law clerks.

As we look forward to all of these great events – and many in-person – we are hoping we will see you soon!
