Part-Time Job Opportunity: Pro Se Attorney Coordinator – Capital District

We are accepting applications for an attorney to work, on a part-time basis, with the FCBA’s Pro Se Assistance Program.  This is a paid position.

The Federal Court Bar Association of the Northern District of New York’s Pro Se Assistance Program was established to assist non-incarcerated litigants who are representing themselves in federal court with preparing and drafting their papers in support or defense of a civil action filed, or to be filed, in the Northern District of New York. The Pro Se Assistance Program serves non-incarcerated pro se litigants throughout the district. The Pro Se Attorneys do not advise or represent the litigants, nor do they appear in court with the litigants.  Their sole function is to review and assist individuals with the processes and procedures of filing Pro Se in the NDNY.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • An attorney in good standing admitted to practice in the State of New York and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York;
  • Familiarity with the Pro Se Handbook, published by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York;
  • Familiarity with the Local Rules for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York;
  • Access to support services to ensure timely response to litigant inquiries.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide timely information and assistance in the initiation and defense of civil litigation in the NDNY;
  • Receive requests from the Administrative Director of the FCBA of inquires to the Pro Se Assistance Program;
  • Respond to requests in a timely fashion;
  • Maintain call logs and records regarding contact with any Pro Se litigants;
  • Provide information about federal court procedure;
  • Assist in the preparation of pleadings and other court documents;
  • Offer consultation relating to discovery and motion practice;
  • Provide assistance in accessing additional information and/or research about legal issues;
  • Provide referrals to other services, in appropriate cases;
  • Prepare quarterly reports and an annual cumulative report to be sent to FCBA and the Court.

Compensation and Benefits: Compensation for this position is $15,000 per year, paid quarterly.  The individual would be an independent contractor; there are no fringe benefits.
